The Spirit Who Heals
If you or any member of your family are ill then please contact the Parish Office or speak to a Church Warden or Clergy to be included on the prayer list.
Please ensure we are informed of any changes in circumstances.
Our last Team Rector, Peter H Lawrence, was a well-known speaker and writer on the healing ministry of Jesus in the Church today. His book on healing, “The Spirit who Heals” is now one of the most authoritative publications on the healing ministry.
John Buckeridge recommends a book he predicts will "become a classic on healing"
He continues (abridged):This is a delightfully real, open, and vulnerable account of how an Anglican
clergyman learned about and developed a significant ministry in healing..... He recalls the lessons he has
learned — some painful — all deeply encouraging, in a classic and readable mix of theory and practice.
He skilfully weaves theology with testimonies of healing encounters he has personally witnessed or heard
first-hand from credible eye witnesses.
Maybe like me you've read your fair share of books on healing which stretch credulity beyond breaking point. Sadly, the healing ministry seems to attract a good proportion of dogmatic crackpots. Happily, Lawrence is not in that category - he is sane, self-deprecating, thoughtful, grounded in Scripture, and hugely challenging.
Throughout, Lawrence recommends and offers Biblical accounts to support this view, that "ministry" time should involve a period of waiting on God. He highlights the weakness of the "name it and claim it" approach to healing, but thankfully does not offer an alternative set of healing formulas.
At its heart, this book emphasizes his view that healing is a gift of the Holy Spirit, who gives "just as He determines. "... Lawrence describes many glorious and often humorous accounts of physical healing, such as the deaf man he prayed with in a broom cupboard who was totally healed !....
"The Spirit who heals" also recounts some occasions when healing did not take place... He recalls times when he has attempted to pick up the pieces after a healing evangelist has visited a town and highlights the two main problems : * those who were not healed, and * those who were healed on Saturday, but were ill again days later....
Unlike so many books on healing that have left me feeling immobile, Lawrence encouraged me to press on, but also to take care against thoughtlessly rushing in.
