VOLUNTEERING FOR THE KINGFISHER RIVERSIDE PROJECT AND PLATFORM

Kingfisher is a joint project between Canford Magna church and Canford School.

We want to open this local beauty spot and the River Stour for all to enjoy. RSPB have joined us to help with spotting the birdlife and wildlife and with learning about conservation. There will be wildlife and birding walks and talks, activities, and refreshments in our Canford Magna Centre [CMC].

We aim to build a team of keen volunteers to survey the natural history of the area and welcome visitors with guided walks and wildlife talks on the riverside platform. RSPB are going to help us. That’s where you come in, as a friendly and keen on wildlife volunteer!

WHAT IS THE KINGFISHER RIVERSIDE PROJECT?

The whole site includes the church, grounds, CMC, riverside paths, Stour Way, the bridge, and the riverside boathouse platform. This last part, the platform, is for disabled persons and their helpers and supervisors.

The Kingfisher Riverside Platform [KRP]: Disabled focused groups

This is a substantial viewing platform on the school’s boathouse. The boathouse is an active area for the school but they are sharing the facility at times when it isn’t in use.

The platform can only be used by disabled focused groups who have booked their visit with our KRP administrator. The volunteers will join each group to talk about the river, help with supervision and activities, and guide the group to toilets and refreshments. The Saxon Parish Church and ‘Living churchyard’ are disabled friendly and will be open with a guide to their treasures.

The Kingfisher Riverside project

For the community

The river paths, including ‘The Stour Way’, the church and surrounds and refreshments at the Canford Magna Centre are open to all on advertised days for activities. The tow path, bridge and Stour way are not suitable for wheelchairs and those with poor mobility. We are planning bird walks, wildlife talks with our volunteers, and art projects, photography and more! Booking for these activity days is through our KRP administrator.
